Liminal Figures is a dissemination of capstone research from Appalachian State’s 2023 Graphic Design Senior Studio. The publication discusses the liminality of transitioning into the work field, displacement as students, and our individual research.

My research encompasses my half Indian heritage, critical analysis of the consequence of colonial exploitation pertaining to the 1947 Partition of India and Pakistan, and the generational trauma which persists among families of South Asian descent. Personal family imagery, and incorporating tactile materials, such as fabric,  are the mediums of which I communicate my research.

Sequencing

The publication was sequenced according to related capstone research topics; on either side of my spreads are Cooper Hendershott, who researched non-conforming gender identities and critical commentary of right-wing bigotry, and Maya Carr, whose research pertains to personal introspection and growth for women, and feminine sexual exploration.

Production

Trimming, collating, and binding each copy was a group effort. Working as a functioning production team was a crucial aspect of bringing this publication together into a finished artifact.

Book Launch

Our publication culminated into a book launch held at a new local brewery in Boone, NC. Attendees were able to browse through Liminal Figures while enjoying conversation, food, drink, and live music. It was a very organic, intimate way to share our capstone research with our community.
